This fall, Yellowdig has seen about an 18% increase in active Yellowdig Communities as compared to the fall of 2021 and is continuing to grow.
Yellowdig has proven to be a critical aspect of the learning experience, across all modalities, including in-person, as most institutions return back to in-person teaching this fall.
Why are more institutions choosing to adopt Yellowdig?
Improved Conversations Lead to Deeper Learning
“By turning to an edtech platform designed to drive discussions, we fostered rich conversations among our MBA students about diversity and inclusion,” shares 2 Babson College faculty members in an article published in September by AACSB about their experience leveraging Yellowdig Engage for student-led conversations.
The article goes on to explain, “Prior to using Yellowdig, we first would introduce students to the topic of diversity and inclusion; then, we would ask them to form teams to create presentations focused on products or examples of their choice. These presentations did raise their awareness of diversity topics, but this approach only took them so far. However, the online discussion format encouraged students to explore various topics together, as they shared their thoughts and views via two-way exchanges. By the end of the class, students’ views of marketing had been transformed, as evidenced by their feedback. One student said, “I didn’t expect that the discussions about diversity and inclusion would completely change the way I think.” Another credited the platform’s capacity to “foster the conversation and create meaningful discussions.”’
Ample Data to Inform Teaching + Interventions
Denise Pearson, who teaches an Advancing Academic Achievement course at Aims Community College, shared in a webinar, “Something that I've really enjoyed about Yellowdig is the ability to see how my community is doing. There is so much more data that I'm able to gather to understand the different ways students are engaging,” she elaborates, “As a community college, many of our students are first generation. They're new to college, and coming to college, particularly to an online modality, this allows me to quickly see who's engaging, and who's not engaging. I can do some interventions which I think is really really important, particularly at the beginning. The thing that I found is that it can be such a confidence builder once they get Yellowdig."
Inspiring Student Creativity and Active Learning (While being great for the instructor too!)
In an article published on LinkedIn,Tess Testeza shares her experience teaching a Russian Language Course with Yellowdig. She shares about her students’ use of Yellowdig saying, “A contest of videos with participants rapping in Russian; another contest of Pirate Song performers; theatrical small-group productions of the Red Riding Hood (modern audio version in Russian); and serious, semester-long metacognitive written discussion as the course was progressing – all that was not only possible but highly transparent and attractive on Yellowdig, due to its richness of formats. Actually, it was the YD design itself which inspired students to be free creators and free thinkers throughout the course.”
Testeza speaks to her experience too, sharing, “For an educator, it’s a sweet deal, too: once you establish the values of a comment and an emoji (as well as different accolades), the system counts points automatically, and it transfers the points to Canvas Grades automatically as well. Still, you are in control, and any post or comment may be manually regraded to encourage staying on course.”
Ultimately, instructors are seeing deep value in their use of Yellowdig Engage for themselves and their students, and word is spreading.
Is Yellowdig only used in courses?
A common misconception is that Yellowdig is only used in the course setting. In reality, Yellowdig is able to be used across a student’s entire time at an institution - from admission to alumni. As discussed in Yellowdig’s Founder and CEO’s blog post here, Yellowdig is critical to creating a connected learning experience that is a big piece of elevating institutions from Education 2.0 to Education 3.0.
