For Gen Z Americans, finding a job isn’t just about the paycheck—it’s about the vibe. According to a new survey conducted by Superprof, the world’s largest tutoring network, young adults ages 18–28 are entering the job market with strong preferences, sky-high expectations, and a healthy dose of slang.
The top deal-breaker? A toxic work environment, cited by nearly 40% of respondents. Low pay and lack of financial transparency came in second (27%), followed by inflexible hours. As for perks, it’s all about the atmosphere: a good work environment (29%) and flexible hours (28%) ranked highest, far above more traditional offerings like employee discounts.
“Gen Z isn’t just job-hunting—they’re curating an experience,” said Mina Ozdemir, PR Manager at Superprof. “They want work that aligns with their values, lets them grow, and doesn’t burn them out. If the vibes are off, they’re out.”
When it comes to actually landing those jobs, Gen Z is going digital and getting a little creative. Most said they prefer applying online (62%), with Indeed and LinkedIn taking top spots. But TikTok (17%) and Instagram (12%) are gaining traction, with many Gen Zers willing to explore unconventional “life hacks” to stand out. And with 8% of respondents saying they’d seek a career coach on Superprof, many said they were eager to level up other key skills this summer, with financial literacy topping the “side quest” list (32%).
“The idea behind a summer job is to gain experience that will propel you forward in your career trajectory,” said Laura McIntyre, a career coach and Superprof tutor. “The ultimate goal is for more opportunities to flourish from your engagement, so you want to be sure that your values are aligned with those of the organization that you're looking to join. Although it may be your first experience and a way to get your foot in the door—any door—it is important to consider your personal boundaries. If you know, for example, that strict working hours are a deal-breaker for you, you might rethink that application to the 9–5er, even though you're still a bit green.”
Key Findings from Superprof’s Survey:
- Job Status: 52% of Gen Zers surveyed said “Bet” to having already secured a summer job or internship, while 29% are still looking.
- Mood Check While Searching for a Job: 35% said their POV is “Stressed – This is too much,” while 29% said they were “Just vibing – I'll figure it out eventually.”
- Top Platforms for Job Hunting: Indeed (32%), LinkedIn (30%), TikTok (17%), Instagram (11%) are the go-to platforms.
- Overall Feelings About Their Future Job Outlooks: 27% are feeling “Optimistic / Let’s Go”; 38% feel “Okay/Mid” and 23% are “Pessimistic/Big Yikes!”
- Eye-Opening: Has Social Media Provided a Realistic View Of What Working Is Like? 48% of respondents said no, 28% were unsure, and only 24% answered yes.
- Job Application Preferences: 62% prefer applying online, followed by applying in person (22%), while a small but perhaps honest 2% responded, 'Nepotism baby!”
The survey of 103 Gen Z adults was conducted via SurveyMonkey in May 2025 and offers a snapshot of a generation balancing hustle with high standards, and finding new ways to shape the workplace in their image.
