Washington, D.C., and Cambridge, Mass., July 28, 2026 — As higher education institutions face mounting pressure to demonstrate outcomes, improve student experience, and compete in an increasingly data-driven environment, a new kind of leadership is emerging: one grounded in analytics, benchmarking, and strategic use of data.
To support this shift, UPCEA, the online and professional education association, in collaboration with MIT Professional Education, will host Online Learning by the Numbers: An Enterprise Data Institute for Chief Online Learning Officers on July 28, 2026, as a pre-conference to the 2026 Summit for Online Leadership and Administration (SOLAR).
Hosted on MIT’s campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the invitation-only institute will convene a select group of Chief Online Learning Officers (COLOs) for an intensive, action-oriented experience designed to help senior leaders translate complex data into institutional strategy.

The Data Institute reflects a growing recognition across higher education: that online learning leaders must not only understand data, but actively leverage it to inform program design, resource allocation, and executive communication.
The program brings together expertise from across the online education ecosystem, including insights on rankings, benchmarking, student experience, and institutional performance. Participants will engage with thought leaders from organizations such as U.S. News & World Report, Quality Matters, the International Distance Education Benchmark Project (IDEBP), and UPCEA.

Designed as more than a traditional pre-conference, the institute emphasizes peer exchange, applied learning, and strategic reflection. Through a combination of expert-led sessions, small group discussions, and guided exercises, participants will develop a personalized action plan to strengthen their institution’s data strategy and leadership approach.
Sessions will explore key issues shaping the future of online education, including:
- The methodology and strategic implications of national online program rankings
- Benchmarking models and operational structures for scalable online enterprises
- Trends in online quality assurance and student experience
- Aligning internal data systems with institutional and external demands
The program will also incorporate informal networking opportunities and experiential elements, including a campus exploration activity and an evening reception featuring a fireside chat with Dr. Abel Sanchez, an MIT Research Scientist specializing in data science, and a chance to foster deeper connections among participants and the MIT community.
Attendance at the Data Institute is limited to Chief Online Learning Officers who are registered for the 2026 SOLAR conference, reinforcing its role as a focused, high-level convening of senior decision-makers shaping the future of digital learning.
The institute will take place on July 28, 2026, from 1:00–7:30 p.m., immediately preceding the SOLAR conference.
