Dive Brief:
- Applications to Dartmouth College for the class of 2018 dropped 14%.
- Reports of fraternity hazing and sexual harassment have plagued the school recently.
- By comparison, Harvard University showed a 2.1% decline in applications.
Dive Insight:
Besides the bad publicity, there are likely other factors at work. This is the first class for which Dartmouth will not accept Advanced Placement credit, for example. Also, the number of high school graduates began to decline with the class of 2012, so demographics are working against it. (That's what Dartmouth suggested in a statement.) Meanwhile, Princeton, Yale, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania saw increases in applications.
