Dive Brief:
- Northeastern University’s adjunct professors have voted to form a union.
- The 323-286 vote will see the adjuncts represented by the Service Employees International Union, which will negotiate terms of employment with Northeastern’s administration.
- Next up in the Boston area for SEIU’s “Adjunct Action” organizing campaign: Boston University.
Dive Insight:
Boston is one of the nine cities originally targeted by SEIU’s campaign to unionize adjunct professors. In the last eight months, adjuncts at three other Boston-area universities have held labor union votes — in favor at Lesley University in February and Tufts University last fall, and against (by two votes) at Bentley University October. The adjunct professors at Boston University are organizing now, but have yet to file with the National Labor Relations Board for an election.
