Dive Brief:
- The University of California-Los Angeles will pay $500,000, including $350,000 in scholarships, to settle a lawsuit that accused campus police of mistreating Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Cunningham during a traffic stop in 2013.
- Cunningham, a prominent black judge, had sued for $10 million, accusing the police of racial profiling and mistreatment.
- Under the settlement, Cunningham and his attorney will receive $150,000 and the remaining $350,000 will establish a scholarship fund named after the judge, to be administered by the UCLA Black Alumni Association for undergraduate or law students.
Dive Insight:
UCLA gets off easy, considering the allegations and the plaintiff, and the judge is taking the high road. According to the Los Angeles Times, Cunningham said he was stopped just seconds after he left a gym, not even close to university property, and police shoved him against his car, handcuffed him, and locked him in the back seat of a police cruiser until a black sergeant arrived. He said he was left “shaken, battered and bruised.” In addition to the payout, UCLA will improve diversity training for police and hold a one-day community forum about relations between police and the public, including racial profiling.
