Dive Brief:
- The University of Hawaii’s Board of Regents ended its year-long search for a new president on Monday with the selection of interim president David Lassner.
- Lassner, who was the university’s information technology executive, beat out the other remaining candidate, retired Army Gen. Francis Wiercinski, on an 11-2 vote.
- Two regents abstained, saying that the selection process was too flawed.
Dive Insight:
Originally, the regents were going to narrow the field of candidates to five or six, with the names made public. But several candidates dropped out as a result, leaving Lassner and Wiercinski. Critics had called on the board to re-open the search, and at least three regents agreed with their appraisals of the search process, the Honolulu Civil Beat reported.
