Debbie Dingell, chairwoman of the WSU Board of Governors, hailed Wilson's hiring as a "historic day" for the university. She said there were a number of outstanding candidates but the board felt Wilson was "the perfect candidate at the perfect time for Wayne State."
"He has a history of leadership in higher education, in research and in medicine," Dingell said. "He has a deep interest in and understanding of the needs of this urban research university. We, the board, are very confident in Wayne State's future under the leadership of Dr. Wilson and look forward to great things from our university in the years to come."
