Which university is going to house President Barack Obama's presidential library? Some universities are already vying for the honor of memorializing Obama's legacy and housing his presidential records, although Obama himself has given no indication who that might be.
Here's are some of the schools currently seeking to house the next presidential library and the actions they have taken thus far:
THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO (UIC)
According to UIC spokesman Bill Burton, Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares made the decision to form an exploratory committee in May to look into bidding for Obama's presidential library. Burton provided no further details on the matters while Allen-Meares would not comment.
CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU)
As a historically black institution located in the neighborhood where Obama began his career as a grassroots community organizer in the 1980s, CSU thinks it has a pretty good shot at snagging the presidential library.
The school announced it had formed an exploratory committee in May. Watson also indicated CSU officials are dialoguing with the National Archives and Records Administration, which helps administer presidential libraries, and librarians at some of the 13 presidential libraries.
In an interview last week, CSU President Wayne Watson outlined his pitch, "[President Obama's] political roots are right here on the South Side, pretty much in a 2-mile radius of where we are. Secondly, President Obama represents hope … If there is one community in Chicago that needs to have hope reinforced, it's the community where the president got his start."
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO (UChicago)
The official stance from UChicago is that it is premature to speak about bidding for the library.
Despite this, university officials including Susan Sher, formerly Michelle Obama's chief of staff and currently senior advisor to the UChicago president, traveled to the George W. Bush Presidential Library at Southern Methodist University in December to speak with library officials there.
It's too early to tell, but UChicago, the school where Obama was a professor, seems like a likely candidate to make a bid when the time comes.
THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII (UH)
Last year, UH launched the Hawaii Presidential Center Initiative in order to convince Obama that Hawaii, where Obama was born, is the best place for his legacy.
The initiative's director, Robert Perkinson, said in May that Hawaii has "set aside oceanfront property in Honolulu that could be used for the library," according to USA Today.
