Dive Insight:
Unfortunately for the protesters, a cute little biting bear cub was the story of the day from Washington University. Friday's was the latest in a series of protests held on the campus since early April by a group targeting Peabody, a St. Louis coal company. The group — Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment, or MORE — has been hosting small protests on campus targeting the St. Louis-based coal company. MORE has also advocated for a ban against tax incentives for companies using energy the group labels as unsustainable. During Friday’s protest, Washington University police were joined by St. Louis County police officers to guard one of the building’s entrances. The St. Louis police arrived carrying riot gear, but ended up not wearing it. Several students were detained when they tried to get in the building. The protesters who were arrested were charged with trespassing and disturbing the peace.
