Dive Brief:
- California community college students will have to meet minimum academic standards to have their fees of $46 per unit waived.
- Starting in fall 2016, students will have to have a 2.0 GPA or above for two consecutive terms and get a D or above in at least half of their units in order to qualify for a fee waiver.
- About 40% of the state's community college students have their fees waived.
Dive Insight:
While these new standards do not sound lofty, one estimate is that more than 40,000 students could lose their waivers under the new policy. The plan does allow students to appeal the loss of a waiver if they have extenuating circumstances.
