Dive Brief:
- Florida State University is investigating rape accusations against its star quarterback, Jameis Winston, that date back to December 2012.
- The school has begun a disciplinary inquiry in the Winston's case, the New York Times reports.
- Winston allegedly raped a female student in his apartment and previously appeared to receive favorable treatment because of his status as a star athlete — both from the Tallahassee Police Department, which failed to properly investigate the allegations, and Florida State, which took no action when Winston declined to speak about the incident.
Dive Insight:
Some of the lasting images from the Winston case were from a December 2013 press conference by State Attorney Willie Meggs, where he announced that no charges would be filed against Winston, all while engaging in banter and joking around with some of the members of the media. Why is Florida State investigating now? It could be that the school is finally feeling some pressure from the federal investigation into its handling of the case.
The university is on the long list of schools under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for possible violations of its rules regarding sexual assault and sexual harassment. The excellent New York Times story from April about how the Winston case was botched is worth a read.
