Dive Brief:
- Anthem Education, a for-profit company with 34 campuses, appears to be closing down operations in at least four states.
- The list of closures include two of its three Missouri campuses, as well as campuses in Texas, Wisconsin, and Georgia.
- An Anthem spokesman told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the company is in the middle of a serious cash crunch, but that “closure isn’t a foregone conclusion.”
Dive Insight:
The Anthem spokesman seemed to hint that the company is trying to arrange for a bailout sale or merger short of closing, telling the Post-Dispatch that: “The company is going through a financial transition” and “there are various solutions being sought.” Anthem informed the state of Missouri last week that it would lay off 67 employees by Sept. 15, and gave similar notices in Texas, Wisconsin, and Georgia this month. Websites for the company’s three Missouri campuses notify potential students that enrollment is closed.
