- The State University of New York will merge two of its technology colleges in an attempt to create New York’s answer to elite tech schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- The SUNY Institute of Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology will be created by a merger of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany and the SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica.
- Approvals from state officials and SUNY’s accreditor are needed before the merger is completed, but those are expected by January 2015.

The new college, called INSET, will maintain principal locations in Albany and Utica. According to the Albany Times Union, the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany has been flourishing, while its Utica peer has been struggling financially. All faculty and staff at the two schools will keep their current jobs with the merger, and the number of SUNY campuses will remain at 64.
