Dive Brief:
- The University of Saskatchewan’s new president says he will not reinstate a dean whose firing led to the removal of the former president.
- Robert Buckingham is a tenured professor and former dean of public health at the university who was fired after he spoke out against the school’s cost-cutting program. He was reinstated as a professor, but his initial firing and the handling of the case led to the ouster of former president Ilene Busch-Vishniac.
- The new president, Gordon Barnhart, says the university will continue with its cost-cutting and restructuring program, although the school will probably rename the program.
Dive Insight:
Barnhart was presented on Monday with a letter signed by more than 850 students calling for an end to the cost-cutting program, called TransformUS, the Globe and Mail reported. University officials predict that the school will be $44.5 million in debt in two years, due in part to a smaller-than-expected increase in government funding in 2012 — or less than 2%, compared to the 5.8% that was expected.
