Dive Brief:
- First-year student perceptions of how much support they receive in the college environment is tied to the number of times they meet with an academic advisor, according to a new report from the National Survey of Student Engagement.
- Nearly a third of first-year students had little or no interaction with an advisor — 23% met once with an advisor and 9% never met.
- The results also show that, for black and Latino students, the overall quality of interactions with students, faculty, and other staff on campus is lower than for white students.
Dive Insight:
The report, "Bringing the Institution into Focus—Annual Results 2014," concluded that how selective a college or university is has little relation to the quality of student experience at that institution. The survey also shows one of the drawbacks to the prevalence of social media: about 40% of first-year students reported that social media substantially distracted them from their school work, and a third of seniors said the same.
