Dive Brief:
- Most higher education human resources directors believe that their institutions provide fair compensation to adjunct faculty, but they’re less ardent in that belief than they were a year ago.
- In an August survey managed by Inside Higher Ed, 20% of HR chiefs polled “strongly agreed” their adjuncts are fairly compensated, compared to 24% last year. And 37% said they provide appropriate job security and protections to adjuncts, down from 45% in 2013.
- The survey also showed that almost 90% of the head HR officials believe their own institution is doing enough to stop sexual harassment, but only two-thirds believe colleges and universities in general are doing enough.
Dive Insight:
The online survey received 330 responses from higher ed HR chiefs. The most concerning retirement issue for the respondents was growing health care costs for retirees, with 67% saying they were very concerned or moderately concerned. Additionally, 64% expressed concern with faculty working past their retirement age. Lack of retirement incentives for faculty was a moderate concern for 51%.
