Dive Brief:
- International student applications to U.S. graduate schools increased in 2014 for the ninth year in a row, up 10%, and initial offers to those applicants rose for the fifth year in a row, up 9%.
- Applications from China, which sends 33% of all international grad students to U.S. colleges and universities, dropped 1%, following a 3% decline in 2013, according to the Council of Graduate Schools survey.
- For India, which accounts for 18% of the international grad students in the U.S., applications were up 33%.
Dive Insight:
The top five countries sending grad students to the U.S. are China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, and Canada, accounting for 64% of the total international grad student body. Brazil had the largest jump in applications from 2013 to 2014 of the individual companies tracked, up 61%. By region, grad school applications were up 9%, 8%, and 3% for Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, respectively. By field of study, the largest jump in applications were for physical and earth sciences, up 18%, and engineering, up 12%.
