Dive Brief:
- The Andover Newton Theological School’s board of trustees is sticking by the school’s news president after considering delaying his inauguration because he had an extramarital affair.
- The president of the Christian seminary, the Rev. Martin Copenhaver, assumed the role in June and was inaugurated earlier this month.
- Just days before the inauguration, Copenhaver sent out a letter to the school community acknowledging the affair, expressing remorse and asking for forgiveness, the Boston Globe reported.
Dive Insight:
According the Globe, news of the affair bothered many of the seminary’s current and graduated students and faculty. Copenhaver says the affair ended before he applied for the president’s position, and that it wasn’t with someone associated with a school and church where he had worked. The trustees censured him because he didn’t disclose the affair during the search process, but consulted faculty members and decided to let him remain, even after he had offered to resign.
